What is Valtrex used for?

Valtrex (Valacyclovir) is used to treat cold sores, genital herpes, and herpes zoster in adults and treat cold sores and chickenpox in pediatric patients. Valtrex (Valacyclovir) is also approved for suppression in immunocompetent patients. 

How does it work?

It inhibits the replication of viral herpes DNA by competitive inhibition of viral DNA polymerase, incorporation and termination of the growing viral DNA chain, and by inactivating viral DNA polymerase

Patients with existing renal dysfunction or patients on numerous other medications that are potentially nephrotoxic should exercise caution with this medication as it can cause acute renal failure. 

Elderly patients should exercise caution with this medication as some patients have reported agitation, confusion, and even hallucinations while taking this medication.
