It is used to improve glycemic control in adults with diabetes.

How does it work?

It lowers blood glucose by stimulating glucose uptake and inhibits hepatic glucose production.

Directions

How do I take Toujeo Solostar?

Toujeo Solostar should be administered based on an individualized dose based on glycemic goals, type of diabetes, and metabolic needs. 

It is generally administered subcutaneously once daily at anytime during the day (same time each day) 

Ensure you rotate injection sites 

Do not mix with any other insulin products

Never share your Toujeo Solostar with another person even if the needle is changed. 

Hypo- and hyperglycemia can both be risks of changing your insulin regimen, ensuring you are monitoring your glucose closely when starting or changing your regimen. 

Hypoglycemia is a life threatening condition that is a risk with using any insulin product, making drastic changes to your meals or physical activity can put you at risk. 

In that this may not be your only insulin product, ensuring you read the labels carefully before administration is important. 

Severe hypersensitivity reactions can occur with this medication, discontinue Toujeo if you experience an allergic reaction to this medication.

Does this medication interact with other drugs, foods, or alcohol?

Given that Toujeo is an insulin product, it carries a significant number of drug interactions. Certain medications can put you at risk for hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. It is important to know if any changes to your medications may put you at risk listed below are some examples. 

  • Increased risk for Hypoglycemia: antidiabetic agents, ACE/ARBs, fluoxetine, sulfa antibiotics. 
  • Increased risk of Hyperglycemia: corticosteroids, olanzapine, diuretics, oral contraceptives, albuterol, thyroid medications. 

Storage

How should this medication be stored?

Unopened Toujeo solostar pens should be stored in the refrigerator (36°F and 46°F). DO NOT FREEZE. 

The open (in use) Solostar pen may be stored at room temperature (<86°F) away from direct light and heat for 28 days, then must be discarded.
