What is Relpax (Eletriptan)?

Relpax (Eletriptan) is a prescription medication that is classified as a serotonin (5-HT) receptor agonist.

Uses

What is Relpax (Eletriptan) used for?

It is used for the treatment of acute migraines (with or without aura) in adults. It cannot be used for cluster headaches, prevention of migraines, or in adults without a diagnosis for migraines.

How does it work? 

When Relpax binds to the 5-HT receptors on intracranial blood vessels and the sensory nerves of the trigeminal system, it causes vasoconstriction which inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides.

How do I take Relpax (Eletriptan)? 

Take Relpax as directed by your doctor, with or without food. 1 dose should be taken at the onset of a migraine. A second dose may be administered, if received prior authorization from the doctor, 2 hours after the first dose if migraine has not improved.

What dosages are available?

Relpax (Eletriptan) is available as brand and generic 20 mg and 40 mg tablets.

What is the recommended dosage?

1 dose is given at migraine onset; a second dose 2 hours later may be warranted in certain individuals. Refer to your doctor for specific dosing recommendations.

What if I miss a dose?

What should you know before you take Relpax (Eletriptan)?

In patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors, cardiac evaluation should be performed in these individuals by their doctor prior to using Relpax

Discontinue Relpax if you experience any arrhythmias

Evaluate patients at high risk of CAD if they experience: chest/throat/neck/jaw pain, tightness, or heaviness

Discontinue Relpax if you experience a cerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, or stroke

Discontinue Relpax if you experience gastrointestinal ischemia, infarction events, or peripheral vasospastic reactions

Avoid using this medication more than 2 times per week to avoid medication overuse

Discontinue Relpax if you experience symptoms of serotonin syndrome

Interactions

Does this medication interact with other drugs, foods, or alcohol?

Concomitant use with ergot-derivatives and/or other 5-HT agonists is contraindicated within 24 hours as these medications can have an additive effect of prolonged vasospastic reactions
Relpax should not be used with CYP3A4 inhibitors within 72 hours as these inhibitors can increase the Relpax exposure and increase the risk for side effects
The risk for serotonin syndrome is increased if Relpax is combined with SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs and MAO inhibitors

How should this medication be stored?

Keep Eletriptan in the original container and store it in a dry place at room temperature 15-30°C (59-86°F).

  • Keep a log of when you take your dose(s) to show your doctor at follow-up visits so they can determine if this medication is appropriate for you or if a change in therapy is warranted
  • If you use this medication too frequently, you can cause medication-overuse headaches. To avoid this, limit your triptan dose to 2 days per week and limit it to overall 6 days per month where you use triptans for migraine relief.
  • This medication may cause drowsiness. Use caution after taking a dose and attempt to refrain from driving or operating heavy machinery to prevent injury
    Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include: agitation, confusion, fatigue, sweating, and fast heartbeat. Seek medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms.
