What is Prolensa (Bromfenac)? 

Prolensa (Bromfenac) is a prescription medication that is classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Uses

What is Prolensa used for?

It is used to treat ophthalmic pain and inflammation in patients that have undergone cataract surgery.

How does it work?

It exerts its anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis via inhibition of cyclooxygenase 1 and 2.

Directions

How do I take Prolensa (Bromfenac)?

Bromfenac should be taken as directed by your physician. Taking more of this medication is not recommended. Continue using this medication for the full treatment length even if you start to feel better. To prevent infection, do not touch the tip of the dropper to your eye, close the cap quickly after using, and wash your hands before and after using this medication. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using this eye drop and re-insert after 10 minutes. If you had surgery in both eyes, you may need a separate eye drop bottle for each eye to prevent infection.

It is typically dosed as 1 drop into the eye(s) the day before surgery, the day of surgery, and then for 2 weeks after the surgery but take as directed by your provider.

Using NSAIDs and topical steroids at the same time may cause increases in healing time.
Prolensa may cause keratitis.
Prolensa contains sodium sulfite which may result in anaphylactic symptoms in patients with sensitivity to sulfite.
