Prevacid (Lansoprazole) is a prescription medication that is classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI).

What is Prevacid used for?

It is indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, hypersecretory disease, and peptic ulcer disease. 

How does it work?

It inhibits the final step of acid production thus decreasing gastric acid secretion. 

How do I take Prevacid? 

Take your Prevacid (Lansoprazole)capsule by mouth with a full glass of water in the morning 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast. Do not chew, cut, or crush the capsule or the contents in the capsule. 

Capsules may be opened (intact granules) and sprinkled onto 1 tablespoon of yogurt, strained pears, cottage cheese, apple sauce, or Ensure pudding. This should be swallowed immediately. 

If taking Prevacid (Lansoprazole)twice a day, the first dose should be taken before breakfast and the second dose before dinner.

What dosages are available?

What is the recommended dosage?

It is typically dosed 15mg once daily but take as directed by your provider.

What if I miss a dose?

What should you know before you take Prevacid (Lansoprazole)?

Closteriodioides (formally known as Clostridium) difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) may occur with long-term use of a PPI, especially in hospitalized patients.

Cutaneous and systemic lupus erythematosus has been reported with use (new onset or exacerbation). 

Increased incidence of osteoporosis-related bone fractures of the wrist, hip, or spine can occur with  use of PPI. 

Use of PPIs increases the risk of fundic gland polyps, especially long term use (>1 year).  

Gastrointestinal infections are increased with PPIs. 

Use may increase risk of gastrointestinal infection. 

Hypomagnesemia, although rarely reported, can occur with prolonged use of PPI therapy (3 months +). 

Vitamin B12 deficiency can occur with prolonged use of PPIs (2 years +) due to vitamin B12 malabsorption. 

Acute tubular nephritis has been observed in those taking PPIs and can occur at any time. 

Some products may contain phenylephrine, which can be harmful to those with phenylketonuria (PKU).

Some products may contain benzyl alcohol. Large amounts (99 mg/kg/day) have been associated with fatal toxicity (“grasping syndrome”), which can be fatal.

What are the side effects of Prevacid (Lansoprazole)?

Some common side effects include:

• Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea

Does this medication interact with other drugs, foods, or alcohol?

Use of PPIs can decrease the therapeutic effect of Clopidogrel.

Avoid use with cefuroxime, strong CYP2C19 inducers, dacomitinib, delavirdine, erlotinib, infigratinib, neratinib, pazopanib, pexidartinib, posaconazole, rilpivirine, sotorasib, or St. John’s wort (Risk Category X).

How should this medication be stored?

Your Prevacid (Lansoprazole) should be stored at 25°C (77°F). Excursions are allowed to be stored between 15 to 30°C (59 to 86°F)
