Advair Diskus is an inhaler that contains a combination of two medications, fluticasone, and salmeterol.

What is Advair Diskus used for?

Advair Diskus is used for the maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

How does it work?

Advair Diskus works in two ways. The medication is a combination product. It has Fluticasone and Salmeterol in it. Fluticasone is an inhaled corticosteroid which helps to reduce inflammation in the lungs.

The Salmeterol component helps to relax the smooth muscle of the bronchioles to increase airflow and make it easier to breathe.

How to use Advair?

This medication is administered twice daily by oral inhalation. Be sure to rinse your mouth with water then spit after each inhalation.

Your provider will go through the technique with you to ensure that you are properly using the inhaler and that the medication is being delivered into the lungs. Use the inhaler exactly as prescribed by your provider.

What dosages are available?

Advair and Wixela are available in 100mcg/50mcg, 250mcg/50mcg, and 500mcg/50mcg combinations. The first number is the dose of fluticasone, the second number is the dose of salmeterol.

What is the recommended dosage?

The dosage depends on what indication is being treated. In asthma, the recommended starting dose is based upon the severity of asthma and will usually be the 100mcg/50mcg or 250mcg/50mcg one inhalation twice daily.

For the treatment of COPD, is the 250mcg/50mcg strength, one inhalation twice daily.

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum recommended dose of Advair is the 500mcg/50mcg dose, one inhalation twice daily.

What to do if you miss a dose?

If you miss an inhalation, skip that dose, and continue as you normally would.

It is not recommended to take 2 doses together to make up for a missed dose.
