Drug Information

About Nuvaring (Ethinyl Estradiol/ Etonogestrel)

What is Nuvaring?

Nuvaring is a prescription medication that is classified as a estrogen/progestin combination hormonal contraceptive.

Uses

What is Nuvaring used for?

It is indicated for women of childbearing age to prevent pregnancies.

How does it work?

It exerts its effects by suppressing gonadotropins. By suppressing gonadotropins, this medication primarily inhibits ovulation but also changes the cervical mucus and endometrium to make it difficult for the sperm to enter the uterus and implant.

Directions

How do I take Nuvaring?

Nuvaring should be taken as directed by your doctor. 1 ring is inserted into the vagina every 3 weeks. After 3 weeks, remove the ring and spend 1 week ring-free; this will be the week your period occurs. Attempt to reinsert new rings at the same time of day and same day of the week for each cycle. Ensure the old ring is removed and properly disposed of prior to inserting a new ring. Different contraceptive measures may be needed but vary depending on if this is a new start for contraception or if you are transitioning from a different form of birth control.

What dosages are available?

Nuvaring is available by brand-only as 0.12 mg/0.015 mg rings.

What is the recommended dosage?

Typically 1 ring is inserted into the vagina every 3 weeks with 1 ring-free week but take as directed by your doctor.

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum recommended dosage is 1 ring per 3 weeks.

What if I miss a dose?

If the Nuvaring has been out of the vagina for less than 3 hours, it is okay to reinsert and it will still be effective in preventing pregnancy. If it has been out of the vagina for longer than 3 hours, reinsert a new ring and use back-up methods for birth control for at least 7 days. If after your ring-free week you forget to insert your nuvaring, contact your doctor or pharmacist for guidance.
