What is Nexium (Esomeprazole)?

Nexium (Esomeprazole) is a prescription medication that is classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI).

Uses

What is it used for?

The tablet formulation (prescription only) is indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease. 

How does it work?

It inhibits the final step in acid production which suppresses gastric acid secretion. 

Directions

How do I take Nexium (Esomeprazole) ?

Take your Nexium (Esomeprazole)  tablet by mouth with a full glass of water in the morning before breakfast.Do not chew, cut, or crush the tablet. Remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking the dose. 

What dosages are available?

Nexium (Esomeprazole)  is available as a brand or generic tablet. Nexium (Esomeprazole)  40 mg delayed release tablet is available from Canada as a brand and generic.

What is the recommended dosage?

It is typically dosed 20 mg once daily but take as directed by your doctor.

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum recommended dosage is 40 mg/day.

What if I miss a dose?

Take the medication as soon as possible if you have missed a dose. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return back to your regular schedule. Never double the doses.

 

Precautions

What should you know before you take Nexium (Esomeprazole)?

Closteriodioides (formally known as Clostridium) difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) may occur with long-term use of a PPI, especially in hospitalized patients.

Cutaneous and systemic lupus erythematosus has been reported with use (new onset or exacerbation). 

Increased incidence of osteoporosis-related bone fractures of the wrist, hip, or spine can occur with  use of PPI. 

Use of PPIs increases the risk of fundic gland polyps, especially long term use (>1 year).  

Gastrointestinal infections are increased with PPIs. 

Hypomagnesemia, although rarely reported, can occur with prolonged use of PPI therapy (3 months +). 

Vitamin B12 deficiency can occur with prolonged use of PPIs (2 years +) due to vitamin B12 malabsorption. 

Acute tubular nephritis has been observed in those taking PPIs and can occur at any time.

Avoid use with acalabrutinib, cefuroxime, strong CYP2C19 inducers, dacomitinib, delavirdine, erlotinib, infigratinib, neratinib, pazopanib, pexidartinib, rilpivirine, sotorasib, or St. John’s wort (Risk Category X).
