What is Multaq (Dronedarone Hydrochloride)?

Multaq (Dronedarone Hydrochloride) is a prescription medication that is classified as a class III antiarrhythmic agent. 

Uses

What is Multaq used for? 

It is indicated for the treatment of paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) or atrial flutter (AFL).

How does it work?

It inhibits the potassium channel and prolongs the cardiac action potential. It also inhibits the calcium and sodium channel which antagonizes non-competitive adrenergic activities.

How do I take Multaq (Dronedarone Hydrochloride)? 

The typical dose is to take one tablet twice a day with food as directed by your doctor.

It is available only as a brand medication in a 400mg tablet.

What is the recommended dosage?

Typically it is dosed 400mg twice daily but take as directed by your doctor.

What if I miss a dose?

Warnings & Precautions

What should you know before you take Multaq (Dronedarone Hydrochloride)?

New onset or worsening HF have been observed with use. If a patient develops new/worsening HF requiring hospitalization, stop therapy. 

Severe hepatic injury has been reported with use. If liver injury is suspected, stop therapy. 

Multaq (Dronedarone Hydrochloride) can cause QTc prolongation. 

Multaq (Dronedarone Hydrochloride) can cause an increase in serum creatinine (~0.1 mg/dL) within 7 days of starting the agent.

Interstitial lung disease has been reported with use. 

Electrolyte imbalances should be corrected prior to and during therapy, especially hypomagnesemia or hypokalemia. 

Caution in mild and moderate hepatic impairment.

Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraceptives during treatment.
