Maxalt is a prescription medication that is classified as a serotonin (5HT) 1B/1D receptor agonist.

What is Maxalt used for? 

It is used for the treatment of acute migraine attacks in patients aged 6 years and older. Prior to use, a clear diagnosis for migraines must have been established. It cannot be used for migraine prevention or for the treatment of cluster headache.

How does it work?

It treats migraines by acting as an agonist at the 5HT receptors which are located in the intracranial blood vessels and the sensory nerves of the trigeminal system.

How do I take Maxalt? 

Take Maxalt as prescribed by your doctor. If you do not see improvement in your migraine after the first dose, you may take another dose after 2 hours unless you are between the ages of 6 and 17; taking a second dose in this population should be approved first by the doctor.

What dosages are available?

Maxalt is available as brand and generic 5 and 10 mg tablets.

What is the recommended dosage?

Typically 5 -10 mg is given as a single dose in adult patients at the onset of a migraine. In pediatric patients (6 – 17 years of age), 5 mg is given as a single dose if the child weighs less than 40 kg and 10 mg is given as a single dose if the child weighs greater than 40 kg. Take as directed by your doctor.

What is the maximum dosage?

What if I miss a dose?

There is a risk for cerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and stroke when taking this medication

There is a risk for gastrointestinal ischemic events and peripheral vasospastic reactions

There is a risk for medication overuse headaches if this medication is taken too frequently

There is a risk for serotonin syndrome when taking this medication with other agents that affect serotonin levels

What are the side effects of Maxalt?

Some common side effects (≥5%) include:

• Asthenia/fatigue
• Somnolence

Propranolol has been shown to increase the exposure of Maxalt; the dose of Maxalt may need to be lowered to prevent adverse effects
Do not use concomitantly with ergot-containing drugs within 24 hours of Maxalt as it can cause prolonged vasospastic reactions
Use with other 5HT agonists within 24 hours is not recommended due to increased risk for adverse effects
Increased risk for serotonin syndrome when used with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)
Maxalt should not be used in patients also taking MAO-A inhibitors or non-selective MAO inhibitors as these agents can increase the exposure of Maxalt

How should this medication be stored?

Keep Maxalt in the original container and store it in a dry place at room temperature 15-30°C (59-86°F).

• This medication may cause dizziness. Use caution when first starting this medication especially when driving or operating heavy machinery as this may result in injury.
• To avoid medication overuse, avoid taking Maxalt for more than 2 days per week.
• Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include: agitation, hallucinations, fast heartbeat, and muscle spasms. If this occurs, immediately seek medical attention and let your doctor know as they may choose to prescribe something else for your migraine management.
• Let your doctor know if you have high blood pressure so they can monitor appropriately at your follow-up visits as this medication may cause increases in blood pressure.
