Linzess (Linaclotide) is a prescription medication that is classified as a guanylate cyclase-C (GC-C) agonist. 

What is Linzess used for?

It is indicated for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults.

How does it work?

By binding to the GC-C receptor, levels of (cyclic guanosine monophosphate) cGMP are increased which stimulates the secretion of chloride and bicarbonate into the intestinal lumen. This causes an increase in intestinal fluid and results in faster transit. 

How do I take Linzess? 

Take Linaclotide capsule whole by mouth 30 minutes before your first meal of the day on an empty stomach. Loose stools or increased stool frequency may occur after taking your Linzess. Do not chew, break, or crush capsule or capsule contents.

For those with swallowing difficulties, the capsule can be opened and the contents can be put into apple sauce or water, and swallowed or given via nasogastric or gastric feeding tube.
