Drug Information

About Humalog KwikPen (Insulin Lispro)

What is Humalog KwikPen?

Humalog is a prescription medication that is classified as a rapid-acting insulin.

Uses

What is Humalog KwikPen used for?

It is used for the treatment of type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus in those 3 years of age and up.

How does it work?

It exerts glucose lowering effects by increasing peripheral glucose uptake into skeletal muscle and fat and also through inhibition of hepatic glucose production.

Directions

How do I administer my Humalog KwikPen?

Humalog is a mealtime insulin, which means you will administer it within 15 minutes before your meal or right after. Administer the dose prescribed by your doctor. Only administer if the insulin solution is colorless and clear. Avoid administering cold injections.

Step 1: Check the label on your Humalog KwikPen to make sure that you are using the correct insulin.

Step 2: You will need to attach a new needle with each use. Keep the needle as straight as possible when attaching it to your pen. The Humalog KwikPen uses screw-on or push-on needles.

Step 3: You will need to prime your pen before each injection to remove any air bubbles and ensure that your pen and needle are working correctly. Select a dose of 2 units. You must always prime before your injection to ensure you get the correct dose of insulin.

Remove the outer needle cap and keep it to remove the needle later after your injection. Next, take off the inner needle cap and dispose of it in a sharps container.

Hold the pen upright, with the needle pointing upwards. Gently tap the reservoir to remove any air bubbles that are in the needle.

Hold the pen with the needle pointing upwards. You will then push down on the Dose Knob until it stops and reads “0” in the Dose Window. Hold the Dose Knob for 5 seconds (count to 5 slowly) until you see insulin at the tip of the needle.

  • If you do not see insulin, you will see to prime again, but no more than 4 times.
  • If after this, you still do not see insulin, change the needle and prime again.

Step 4: Make sure that the dose window shows “0” after priming. Then select your prescribed insulin dose in 1-unit steps. If your required dose is > 60 units, you will need to use 2 or more injections.

Step 5: Use the injection method that your doctor or pharmacist showed you. You will either inject the needle subcutaneously in your upper arm, stomach area (abdomen), or thigh (upper leg).

Press the injection button all the way in. Hold the button in that position and slowly count to 10. Then, withdraw the needle.

Step 6: You must remove the needle after each injection and dispose of it appropriately in a sharps container. Place the outer needle cap back on the needle and use it to unscrew the needle from the pen.

Important: Injection sites should always be rotated within the same region (upper arm, stomach area, or thigh). This is to decrease the risk of lipodystrophy.

Dose Selection: A single injection can give a dose between 1 to 60 units. Doses higher than 60 units will require more than 1 injection.

Please also review the full instructions for the use of your Humalog KwikPen that comes with your prescription.

Inject subcutaneously into the thighs, abdomen, arms, or buttock. Injection sites should be rotated within the same region to prevent lipodystrophy or localized cutaneous amyloidosis from occurring. Do not inject into skin with lipodystrophy or localized cutaneous amyloidosis.

Do not dilute your Humalog or mix with other insulins.

What dosages are available?

Humalog KwikPen is available as a brand and generic in 100 units/mL (3 mL pens).

What is the recommended dosage?

The recommended dose varies based on patient-specific factors, refer to your doctor for dosing recommendations.

What if I miss a dose?

A missed dose could result in hyperglycemia. Some symptoms include increased thirst, frequent urination, nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain. Check your blood sugar if you have missed a dose. If it has been roughly within 30 minutes since the missed dose, administer the missed dose. Do not double doses.
