Epivir Information

Epivir is also called lamivudine. It is an antiviral medication for preventing the virus that causes HIV/AIDs from multiplying. It is therefore a medicine for treating people who are HIV positive. Once taken, it can prevent the germs from causing AIDS. However, Epivir cannot cure HIV or AIDS. Note that there is a medicine called Epivir-HBV. This one is for treating people who have hepatitis B. It should not be used by those who have Hepatitis B and HIV.

How To Use

First, don’t give Epivir to a child who is below the age of 2 years. Then, take Epivir the way the doctor prescribes it. Again, don’t combine Epivir or HBV-epivir as both can be dangerous. If being taken by a kid, they should weigh at least 14kg to take the tablet form of this medication.  However, break the tablet in half so they can swallow it easily. Take the medication with or without food. Frequent medical tests are needed when using Epivir, including HIV testing. Don’t change your dosage at all. If you miss a dose, take the medicine the soonest you can recall.

Side Effects

Epivir can cause the following common side effects:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling ill
  • An infection of the ear
  • A nose infection
  • A throat infection.

Prior to taking this medication, ensure that you inform the doctor about your health issues. Let them know you have:

  • A liver disease especially if you suffer from hepatitis B or hepatitis C
  • An allergy to lamivudine
  • To take Epivir-HBV or another medicine containing lamivudine
  • Pancreatitis
  • A kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • A pregnancy as HIV can easily be passed to the child if it is not managed during pregnancy. Don’t breastfeed the child.
