Ella Information

Ella is also called ulipristal. It is a women-only medicine taken to prevent a pregnancy. Ella is an emergency contraceptive pill. It stops or delays the release of an ovum from the ovary. Ulipristal can also stop a fertilized egg from attaching itself to the uterine wall. Thus, Ella is used to prevent an unwanted pregnancy when sex is done without any form of birth control method. It cannot stop you from catching an STD though. Don’t use as a regular birth control pill. It is a onetime kind of pill. Also, don’t use it to terminate an ongoing pregnancy.

How To Use

Take Ella the way it is prescribed by the doctor. Take it the soonest possible after having sex without any form of birth control method. If a condom breaks during intercourse, take Ella as soon as you can. Take a 30mg pill anytime during your menstrual cycle as long as you have don’t exceed 120 days. If you vomit within three hours after taking Ella tablet, call the doctor for advice. You might need to take a new pill as the previous one might fail to help. The medicine can be taken with or without food. After using it, use a barrier birth control method like a condom, diaphragm or spermicide until your next menstrual flow arrives. That’s because a pill like Ella can make your normal contraceptive pill or other contraceptive methods less effective. If you want to use these, then wait at least 5 days after use. Continue to use a barrier method even if you are on a different contraceptive. Grapefruit juice or drink should be avoided.

Side Effects

Ella can cause these common side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Stomachache
  • Menstrual pain
  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness

If you notice signs of an allergy, call the doctor.

Prior to taking Ella, make sure you are not pregnant already. The medicine can cause birth defects. Also, don’t take it if you are allergic to ulipristal. Discuss with your doctor about:

  • An ectopic pregnancy you have ever had
  • Your menstrual period. Let them know if you had it more than a month ago.
  • If you have reached menopause or have not begun your period yet
  • A baby who is breastfeeding as Ulipristal might be absorbed into breast milk and harm the baby
