What is Ampyra used for?
It is used to treat patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) to improve walking.
How does it work?
Through inhibition of the potassium channels, it has shown to increase conduction of action potentials in demyelinated axons.
Directions
How do I take Ampyra?
Take as directed by your doctor. This medication works best if you take very close to every 12 hours and if you minimize missed doses as this medication may take time to show its effects. This medication is not designed to be crushed, chewed, or dissolved; let your doctor know if you have issues swallowing medications. Crushing, chewing, or dissolving the tablet may result in a faster release of this medication that can induce a seizure.
What dosages are available?
It is available as either brand or generic 10 mg 12-hr ER tablets.
What is the recommended dosage?
Typically you will take a 10 mg 12-hr ER tablet by mouth every 12 hours but take as directed by your doctor.
What is the maximum dosage?
The maximum recommended dosage is 20 mg/day.
What if I miss a dose?
If a dose is missed, do not take extra or double your dose.

What should you know before you take Ampyra?
Ampyra is associated with a dose-dependent risk of seizures. Seizures can occur within days to weeks after starting treatment. Seizures have been reported more frequently in patients without a history of seizures. Ampyra should be stopped and not restarted if seizures occur while on the medication.
Renal dysfunction is associated with an increased risk of seizures and other adverse side effects.
