What is Alphagan P?

It is a prescription medication that is classified as an alpha2-adrenergic agonist.

What is Alphagan P used for?

It is used for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension and ocular redness (OTC version only). 

How does it work?

It reduces aqueous humor production and increases uveoscleral outflow to treat open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

How do I use Alphagan P?

It is administered ophthalmically. If you wear contacts, remove the contacts prior to the administration and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting if using products that contain benzalkonium chloride. If using other ophthalmic agents, separate the administration by at least 5 minutes. Avoid touching the tip of the container to any surface, eyelids, and surrounding area. 

What dosages are available?

It is available as a 0.1% or 0.15% ophthalmic solution (5 mL, 10 mL, 15 mL).  Generic Alphagan P is available as 0.15% or 0.2% (5 mL, 10 mL, 15 mL). 

What is the recommended dosage?

This medication is administered into both eyes 3 times daily but take as directed by your doctor.  

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum recommended dosage is 1 drop into the eye(s) four times daily.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss your dose, administer the eye drops as soon as possible. Skip your dose and go back to your regular schedule if it is almost time for your next dose.

What should you know before you take Alphagan P?

Bacterial keratitis can occur if there is inadvertent contamination of multiple-dose ophthalmic solutions. 

May cause CNS depression, which can impair physical/mental abilities. Patients must be educated and cautioned about performing tasks requiring mental alertness (e.g., driving a car). 

Those who wear contact lenses must be educated to remove their contacts prior to administration and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting their lenses if the agent contains benzalkonium chloride. 

It has a Pregnancy Category B.

It is not known if this medication is excreted into human milk. 

Tell your doctor if you have an allergy against PURITE®, which is a preservative used  in this eye drop.

What are the side effects of Alphagan P?

The most common side effects include:

• Drowsiness
• Allergic conjunctivitis
• Conjunctival hyperemia
• Eye pruritus

Does this medication interact with other drugs, foods, or alcohol?

Use caution when using other CNS depressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and tricyclic antidepressants.

How should this medication be stored?

It should be stored at  15°C –  25°C (59°F– 77°F) and has a 30 month shelf-life (unopened). Do not freeze.

• Discard remaining contents of medication 4 weeks after opening.
• Do not touch the tip of the container as it will contaminate the product. 
• Wash your hands before and after using these eye drops.
• If you wear contacts, remove the contacts prior to the administration of this eye drop and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting if using products that contain benzalkonium chloride. If using other ophthalmic agents, separate the administration by at least 5 minutes.
