What is Alinia?

Alinia is prescription medication that is classified as an antiprotozoal agent.

What is Alinia used for?

Nitazoxanide is used to treat diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum or Giarda lamblia.

How does it work?

It inhibits pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase, which is an enzyme that is essential for anaerobic energy metabolism in protozoa species.

How do I take Anilia?

Alinia is taken as either a tablet or suspension, for diarrhea caused by G. lamblia or C. parvum (adults). This medication is taken with food or milk. Do not take more than directed by your doctor. 

What dosages are available?

Alinia is available as 500 mg tablets and 100 mg/5 mL suspension (reconstituted). 

What is the recommended dosage?

 It is typically dosed 500 mg every 12 hours for 3 days but take as directed by your provider. 

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum recommended dosage is 1000 mg/day.

What if you miss a dose?

Take your next dose of Alinia as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule if it is almost time for your next dose. Never double doses. 

What should you know before you take Alinia?

Alinia has not been studied in immunocompromised patients or patients with HIV for treatment of diarrhea caused by G. lamblia. 

Alinia has not been shown to be superior to placebo in immunocompromised patients or patients with HIV for the treatment of diarrhea caused by C. parvum.

Some dosage forms may contain benzoate/benzoic acid, a metabolite of benzyl alcohol, which in large amounts has been associated with a potentially fatal toxicity (“gasping syndrome”) in neonates. “Gasping syndrome” comprises of metabolic acidosis, CNS dysfunction, hypotension, cardiovascular collapse, and respiratory distress.

Some formulations of Alinia may contain sucrose.

Use of Alinia in pregnancy is limited. The active metabolite, tizoxanide, is present in breast milk.

What are the side effects of Alinia?

The most common side effects include:

Alinia tablets should be stored at 25°C (77°F). Excursions are permitted to 15°C-30°C (59°F-86°F)

Alinia Oral Suspension

The unsuspended powder should be stored at 25°C (77°F). Excursions are permitted to 15°C-30°C (59°F-86°F).

The reconstituted suspension can be stored at room temperature for 7 days. After 7 days, the reconstituted suspension remaining must be discarded.

• The tablets and suspension should be taken with food to help increase absorption.
• Alinia reconstituted suspension container cap should be kept tightly closed and the suspension should be shaken before each use/administration. The reconstituted suspension can be stored for 7 days at room temperature and any unused product must be discarded after 7 days.
•  The tablets and suspension are not bioequivalent.
• Use a specially marked measuring spoon or syringe to measure your oral suspension (reconstituted).
