What is Advair HFA inhaler?

Advair is an inhaler that contains a combination of two medications, fluticasone, and salmeterol.

Uses

What is Advair used for?

Advair is used for the maintenance treatment of asthma in those 12 years of age and older.

How does it work?

Advair works in two ways. The medication is a combination product. It has fluticasone and salmeterol in it. Fluticasone is an inhaled corticosteroid which helps to reduce inflammation in the lungs. The salmeterol component helps to relax the smooth muscle of the bronchioles to increase airflow and make it easier to breathe.

How do I take Advair?

This medication is administered twice daily by oral inhalation. Be sure to rinse your mouth with water then spit after each inhalation. Your provider will go through the technique with you to ensure that you are properly using the inhaler and that the medication is being delivered into the lungs. Use the inhaler exactly as prescribed by your provider.

What dosages are available?

Advair HFA inhaler is available in a combination product that contains 45mcg/21mcg, 115mcg/21mcg, and 230mcg/21mcg. The first number is the dose of fluticasone, the second number is the dose of salmeterol.

What is the recommended dosage?

The recommended starting dose of Advair HFA depends on the severity of the patient’s asthma. A common starting dose is 2 inhalations of the Advair HFA 45mcg/21mcg dose twice daily. The dose can then be adjusted based on the patient’s response.

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum recommended dose of Advair HFA is 2 inhalations of the 230mcg/21mcg inhaler twice daily.  

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss an inhalation of Advair, skip that dose, and continue as you normally would. It is not recommended to take 2 doses together to make up for a missed dose.

Precautions while taking Advair include asthma-related death, localized infections, pneumonia, thrush, immunosuppression, adrenal suppression, hypersensitivity reactions, cardiovascular effects, and reduction in bone mineral density.

What are the side effects of Advair?

The side effects of Advair include upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, cough, headache, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and musculoskeletal pain.

Interactions

Does this medication interact with other drugs, foods, or alcohol?

Advair has the potential to interact with certain antibiotics and antiviral medications. Always let your provider know of all medications that you take both prescription and over the counter.

Storage

How should this medication be stored?

Advair should be stored between 15°-30°C (59°-86°F) in a dry place and away from any direct heat or sunlight. Be sure to keep this medication out of the reach of children.

  • If you are having an asthma attack, this medication will not relieve your symptoms. Always carry your rescue inhaler with you for this purpose. If you do not have a rescue inhaler, let your doctor know so they can prescribe one for you. 
  • Let your doctor know if your asthma symptoms do not improve or worsen while taking this medication as this may be a sign you need a higher dose or a different medication. 
  • Do not discontinue this medication on your own if you feel like your symptoms have resolved. This may cause an exacerbation or re-emergence of symptoms. Your doctor may discontinue this medication if they feel like you no longer need it but only discontinue this medication with approval from your doctor. 
  • Rinse your mouth after using this medication to ensure that medication that may have been deposited in the back of your throat is washed away to prevent the development of thrush.
