Advair Diskus (Fluticasone/Salmeterol) - Overview

What is Advair Diskus used for?

Advair Diskus is used to control COPD symptoms and prevent shortness of breath and wheezing associated with asthma. There are two active ingredients in Advair: fluticasone propionate and salmeterol xinafoate. Both COPD and asthma are marked by inflammation and narrowing of the airways. Fluticasone belongs to a family medications known as corticosteroids, which have anti-inflammatory action. Essentially the inflammation in the airways causes irritation and swelling. Salmeterol is classified as a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA). It helps to open and relax the airways which in turn allows you breathe easier.  The long-acting nature of Salmeterol is geared to last for a minimum of 12 hours. The combination of these two ingredients taken in conjunction as prescribed by your doctor will help control your asthma and CODP.

How to use Advair Diskus?

You should take Advair Diskus exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is recommended to use Advair daily, despite not having any symptoms. Typically the dosage is taken twice a day and it is advised to not use the medication more than twice daily. It is important to not modify the dose even if you feel better, as your prescribing doctor will guide you how to tailor your therapy. Advair Diskus is packaged within a foil pouch to protect the device from moisture, which means the medication should only be opened when your ready to start taking your dosage.  There are either 28 or 60 doses in a single Advair Diskus and there is a dose counter which acts as a nice guide to let know how many doses remain per inhaler.

In general it is 6-step process to take an Advair Diskus dose:

  1. Open the Advair Diskus and push the grip away from you til you a click noise is made.
  2. Place the mouthpiece towards you and slide the lever until another click noise is heard. This essentially means the Diskus is ready to be used when the click is heard.
  3. Exhale out away from the Diskus to open the lungs.
  4. Inhale the medication with your lips closed around the mouthpiece and taking a deep breath in. Remove the Diskus from your mouth and hold your breath comfortably for about 10 seconds.
  5. Close the Diskus by pushing the thumb grip back until a click is heard. The dose counter should reflect a dose being taken.
  6. The last step is important - after each dose taken rinse your mouth with water and do not swallow the water.
