Victoza (Liraglutide)is a glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1) agonist. 

What is Victoza (Liraglutide) used for? 

It is used to improve glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes. This diabetes medication is also used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes. 

How does it work?

It increases insulin release when glucose concentrations are elevated, decreases glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner, and delays gastric emptying, which reduces the rate at which postprandial glucose appears in circulation. 

How do I take Victoza?

Liraglutide is an injection that is given subcutaneously.

What dosages are available?

It is available as brand name 18mg/3mL pens. There are either 2 pens in a box or 3 pens in a box.

What is the recommended dosage?

Liraglutide should be dosed as directed by your physician, generally, 0.6mg subcutaneously once daily at the same time each day without regard for meals. 

What is the maximum dosage?

The maximum recommended dosage is 1.8mg/day.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Victoza, wait until your next scheduled dose and administer a normal dose. Do not inject extra medication to make up for the missed dose. 

What should you know before you take Victoza (Liraglutide)?

Victoza (Liraglutide )carries a black box warning for thyroid C-cell tumors. The incidence was found in mice and rats but the incidence has not been determined in humans. If you have a personal or family history of thyroid cancer/ Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN-2) you should not take Victoza.  

Patients have reported pancreatitis with this medication. If you experience severe pain in your abdomen area with or without vomiting you should stop using Victoza (Liraglutide) and call your healthcare provider promptly. 

Do not share your Victoza (Liraglutide) with any other patients. 

If you are also on other diabetes medications (sulfonylurea or insulin) you are at an increased risk for hypoglycemia. It is important to monitor your blood glucose when starting/changing doses of Victoza (Liraglutide) or your other diabetes medications. 

Patients with renal impairment should exercise caution with this medication as it may cause nausea/vomiting and diarrhea associated with dehydration, which can exacerbate a kidney injury. 

Hypersensitivity reactions have occurred with patients using Victoza. Discontinue Victoza (Liraglutide) if you have any swelling of the face, tongue, or throat and seek appropriate medical attention. 

If you are suspected of having gallbladder issues you should be evaluated by your doctor. 

What are the side effects of Victoza (Liraglutide)?

Some common (≥5%) side effects include:

• Nausea

• Decrease appetite
• Dyspepsia
