Budesonide has an anti-inflammatory action while the formoterol increases cyclic AMP levels causing bronchial smooth muscle relaxation.

How do I take Symbicort? 

To use Symbicort you can refer to the package instructions, here is an abbreviated version:

1. Before utilizing your inhaler, shake the inhale for 5 seconds before each use. 
2. The first time using your inhaler after removing it from the packaging, the inhaler requires priming. Hold the inhaler facing away from you with the mouthpiece cover removed and depress the actuator on the top of the inhaler. Shake again for 5 seconds and release a second spray. Your inhaler is now primed. 
3. To use your inhaler ensure the mouthpiece cover is removed and it has been shaken for 5 seconds. 
4. Exhale completely, then place the white mouthpiece into your mouth and close your lips around it. While inhaling deepl;y and slowly through your mouth depress the actuator on top of the inhaler. Hold your breath for as long as is comfortable (10 seconds). While doing so, release the actuator and remove it from your mouth before exhaling. 
5. For the second dose repeat steps 3 and 4. 
6. Rinse your mouth with water after the 2nd dose and spit out water. Do not swallow.

What if I miss a dose?

What should you know before you take Symbicort Inhaler ?

Symbicort is not FDA approved for use in acute asthma attacks, utilize your appropriate inhaler for asthma attacks as directed by your physician.

There is a risk of Candida albicans infection of the mouth and throat while using symbicort. This risk can be mitigated by rinsing your mouth with water without swallowing after each use. 

There is a potential for increased risk of pneumonia in patients with COPD, contact the appropriate healthcare provider if you begin to have symptoms of pneumonia (increased shortness of breath, fever, cough (w or w/o sputum) etc.)

There is a potential for patients receiving corticosteroids to have a reduced immunity. This correlation, however, is not sufficiently supported in patients receiving inhaled corticosteroids. The reported immunosuppressive effects of symbicort will largely be topically related in the airway where the medication acts. 

If you are switching from an oral corticosteroid to Symbicort make sure you are aware of how to do so properly. Your doctor will give you specific instructions in how to do so minimizing your risk of complications. 

Paradoxical Bronchospasms (worsening breathing with symbicort administration) have been reported. If you experience this type of reaction treat it immediately with your provided Short acting (emergency) inhaler. Notify your doctor of this reaction and discontinue use of Symbicort. 

Symbicort has the potential to cause hypersensitivity reactions (allergic). If you have symptoms of hives, swelling of your tongue, rash, or bronchospasms associated with medication administration, notify your physician and discontinue use of symbicort. 

Patients with established cardiovascular disease should exercise caution while using Symbicort. If you notice significant changes in your heart rate, blood pressure or other symptoms while using Symbicort, notify your physician to evaluate these changes. 

Patients on Symbicort for long-term therapy can be at risk for decreased bone mineral density. Patients with established risk factors for bone density issues should make sure they get regular bone density checks with their doctor while taking Symbicort. 

There is an increased risk for slowed growth in children, children should have their growth checked regularly by a primary care physician while using symbicort. 

Increased incidence of glaucoma or cataracts have been reported with using symbicort. Notify your physician if you have had significant vision changes while on symbicort. Patients on Symbicort should have routine eye exams. 

What are the side effects of Symbicort Inhaler?

Some common (≥3% incidence) side effects include:

• Nasopharyngitis
• Headache
• Upper respiratory tract infection 
• Pain/discomfort in the pharynx/larynx 
• Sinusitis 
• Influenza
• Back Pain 
• Nasal congestion 
• Stomach discomfort
• vomiting 
• Oral Candidiasis
• Bronchitis

Does this medication interact with other drugs, foods, or alcohol?

Given that Symbicort is primarily metabolized through CYP3A4 enzymes, caution should be exercised in patients who also take CYP3A4 inhibitors as this can increase the effects of Symbicort. Talk to your doctor if any changes are made to your list of medications. 

Talk to your doctor if you are utilizing a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor or Tricyclic Antidepressant. 

Patients on Beta-blocker therapy should have a conversation with their doctor as these medications can block the effect of the LABA component of Symbicort. 

How should this medication be stored?

Store Symbicort with the mouthpiece cover on at room temperature away from exposed flame or risk of puncture. 

• Ensure your inhaler is straight up and down while using as it being pointed at an angle can prevent all the medication from getting into your lungs. 
• There is a dose counter on the inhaler to help you keep track of how many doses are left 
• If you have not used your Symbicort inhaler in over 7 days it will need to be re-primed.
