Flovent (fluticasone) is a prescription medication that is classified as an inhaled corticosteroid.

What is Flovent used for? 

It is used for the treatment of asthma in those ages 4 years and older.

How does it work?

When Flovent is given by the inhalation route, it has anti-inflammatory effects in the lungs, resulting in reduced symptoms and exacerbations of asthma.

How do I administer my Flovent inhaler?

You will need to prime the medication before first use or if it has not been used for 7 days.

• To prime, you will release 4 puffs into the air away from the face. You must shake your inhaler well for 5 seconds between each puff. The counter should read “120” after priming.

Shake your inhaler for 5 seconds prior to administration/inhalation.

Once your dose counter reads “020”, you should contact your pharmacy for a refill.

Dispose of your inhaler once the counter reads “000”.

Your inhaler should be cleaned at least once a week with a cotton swab damp with water. Clean around the opening of the canister in a circular motion and wipe the inside of the mouthpiece with a tissue damp with water.

You must rinse your mouth with water after each use. Spit out the water and be sure to not swallow it.

Oral candidiasis due to Candida albicans in the mouth and throat (thrush) have been reported with use of Flovent inhaler.

Use with caution is those with osteoporosis as high doses and/or long-term use of corticosteroids have been associated with an increased risk of bone loss and osteoporotic fractures.

Paradoxical bronchospasms can occur and can be life-threatening.
