What is Cymbalta used for? 

It is used for the treatment of fibromyalgia (delayed-release capsules only), generalized anxiety disorder, unipolar major depressive disorder, chronic musculoskeletal pain, and neuropathic pain associated with diabetes mellitus.

How does it work?

It is theorized to exert its antidepressant activity and inhibit pain signals by potentiating the serotonergic and noradrenergic activity in the central nervous system. 

How do I take Cymbalta?

Cymbalta is taken by mouth (capsule should be taken whole) and should not be chewed or crushed. The capsule should not be opened and sprinkled onto food. This can affect the enteric coating of the medication that gives it the “delayed-release”.

What dosages are available?

Cymbalta comes as both brand and generic delayed released particle capsules (20 mg, 30 mg, 60 mg).

What if you miss a dose?

What should you know before you take Cymbalta?

Serotonin syndrome risk can be increased if Cymbalta is taken concomitantly with triptans, tramadol, or other serotonergic agents.

Discontinuation syndrome: Do not abruptly stop taking your Cymbalta as symptoms may arise, commonly including vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, headache, lightheadedness, decreased appetite, dizziness, sleep disturbances, sweating, chills, fatigue, somnolence, tremors, paresthesias, and sweating. 

U.S. Boxed Warning: Suicidal thoughts and behavior. Antidepressants increase the risk of suicidal thoughts/behavior in young adults and pediatric patients in short-term studies.

What are the side effects of Cymbalta?
