Cozaar is prescription medication that is classified as an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB).

What is Cozaar used for? 

It is used to treat hypertension in those 6 years of age and up and diabetic neuropathy with an increased serum creatinine and proteinuria in those with hypertension and type 2 diabetes.

How does it work?

It works by blocking the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor.

How do I take Cozaar?

Take your Cozaar tablet by mouth at the same time daily as instructed by your doctor with or without meals

What if I miss a dose?

What should you know before you take Cozaar?

ARBs do not appear to increase the risk of angioedema. Patients with a history of angioedema due to an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEi) must be educated that angioedema can occur even months after medication discontinuation.

Caution in patients with preexisting renal dysfunction. 

Caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction. Dose adjustments may be needed. 

Avoid use in patients with ascites due to cirrhosis. 

Caution in patients with significant mitral/aortic stenosis.

 Cozaar may not be effective in the black population when used to decrease stroke risk in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy and hypertension.

Do not use Cozaar in children < 6 years or age or those with a GFR < 30 mL/min/1.73m2 due to lack of data.
